Permanent Diaconate

Intellectual Formation

The Permanent Diaconate program is for those who have applied for the Permanent Diaconate formation through the Diocese of Lafayette. Aquinas Lafayette provides their intellectual formation.

Curriculum

Click below for the curriculum (those highlighted in blue can be taken for MA credit; those in yellow are offered through UHC online and are also available for MA credit).

Those in formation to become deacons can take their classes and also obtain a Master of Arts in Theological Studies. The curriculum does not change, but the workload and participation will be intensified.

The classes can also be taken to obtain a Bachelor of Arts as a Theology Major. The core curriculum must be taken with another institution. The curriculum does not change, but the workload and participation distinguish this designation.

Application

If you are in formation for the diaconate for the Diocese of Lafayette, and you would like to receive either a Master of Arts in Theology or a Bachelor of Arts as a Theology Major, then you must apply to UHC.

In the application with UHC, please select “Non Matriculating/Non Degree/Aquinas Institute” as the “Program” under “Academic Information”, and please select “Non Degree Seeking” as the “Enrollment Status”. Click below to apply.

All in the Permanent Diaconate formation must apply with Aquinas Lafayette.

After entering your personal information, you will apply for the educational program.

If you intend to pursue a Master of Arts in Theology with the Permanent Diaconate formation, select “Diaconate Masters” as your “Program-Code”.

If you intend to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Theology with the Permanent Diaconate formation, select “Diaconate Bachelors” as your “Program-Code”.

If you simply wish to receive a Certificate of Completion in order to be considered for ordination to the diaconate, select “Permanent Diaconate (Non-Degree)” as your “Program-Code”.

All will select “Standard” as the “Year-Semester”. Then select the method that you intend to use to take the Aquinas Lafayette courses.

Tuition

The price of the course will depend on the level that you will take the course (i.e., undergraduate, graduate, or non-degree).

Following the tuition rates of the University of Holy Cross, each undergraduate credit hour is valued at $540 (i.e., 3 credit hours=$1620).

Each graduate credit hour is valued at $565 (i.e., 3 credit hours=$1695).

Non-degree diaconal students pay $300 per course.
