Intro to Canon Law
This endeavors to give diaconal candidates a general introduction to the science of canon law and its role in ecclesial life with a view to future pastoral ministry. Students will be introduced to the history, fundamental concepts and interpretation of Church law. It aims to give an understanding of the canonical issues which are a part of ecclesiastical life and in particular how law both shapes and is shaped by the life of the faithful. This course is also intended to be a preparation for the canon law of marriage. Time permitting, consideration will be given to topics of particular interest to students. The course will not cover Marriage, Books V, VI and VII of the Code of Canon Law.*
*Classes for this course are being split over two semesters, Spring & Fall 2026. Spring classes will be every other Saturday, January 10 - April 25, from 8 a.m. - 11 a.m. at Immaculata in Lafayette.
